Table traditions of Nowruz
18 Mart 2024
This ancient holiday, which originates from the times of Zoroastrianism, is associated with the arrival of spring and the rebirth of nature. This is my favorite holiday, for which I carefully prepare.
Be sure to clean your home and get rid of unnecessary things. This symbolizes letting go of the past and being ready for a new beginning.
While decorating a holiday table, according to ancient customs, you must not forget about the 7 characters starting with the letter S: Simuzər (mirror), sikkə (coins), su (water), səməni (sprouted wheat seeds), sirkə (vinegar), səbzi (greens), sumax (sumac). They symbolize prosperity, wealth, fertility.

Novruz is the astronomical arrival of the New Year.
And therefore, our traditional sweets, obligatory symbols of Nowruz, are also astronomical bodies:
Shekerbura is a crescent moon;
Baklava is the star;
Shorgogal and its many layers are our planet Earth;
Shchekerchorek with an orange dot in the middle is an ancient symbol of the Sun.

There is also an interesting suggestion that the 12 layers (sometimes 9) of baklava represent layers of the Earth's atmosphere.
According to various sources, painted eggs represent either a symbol of rebirth, or symbolize the Universe. And of course, how can you do without candles? In Zoroastrianism, fire was the main object of worship, and people believed that fire was a mediator between God and people. Therefore, candles and their lights are also essential holiday companions.

Every time I set the holiday table for Tuesday, I imagine how several hundred years ago our ancestors looked forward to this holiday - in an era without electricity, lighting several candles at the same time was very expensive and returned the light in the middle of the night. I can imagine how happy a child from a peasant family was when his hat was filled with nuts and sweets at a time when sweets were available only 1-2 times a year. In my mind I see a mother who at night sews new clothes for the holiday for her children.
All these people are part of us. All this is our history, which has passed through 2 millennia, and that is why I am trying so hard to preserve it for future generations.
